PATIENCE. If you have ever been stuck in traffic for hours and standing in a long line at the supermarket, you probably know something about patience. The Bible defines patience as a form of “perseverance” and “forbearance” that allows us to respond to “frustrating circumstances” with grace and self-control. Patience is not just merely a personality trait but for us believers it is a “by-product” of the Holy Spirit’s work in our heart and mind.
In the book of Romans 15:4 in the Bible, we learn that such things were written long ago to teach us. Because they give us hope and encouragement as we wait patiently for God’s promises. Knowing God leads to self-control and self-control leads to patient “endurance,” and patient endurance leads to godliness. Further, in the book of Proverbs 14:29 in the Bible, we learn that those who can control their anger have a greater understanding of Him; on the other hand, those with “hasty” tempers will make many mistakes. God uses our relationships to develop our patience. So, “abrasive” relationships teach us to patiently endure. While loving relationships teach us to patiently enjoy.
How can we grow in patience? I realized that becoming impatient comes when we focus on our own agenda and not on God’s will for our lives.
The book of Romans 8:24-25 tells us to look forward to something we don’t have yet, we must wait patiently and with confidence for God. Patience is produced by the hope a believer has in God’s “eternal glory.” Finally in the book of 1 Corinthians 13:4 in the Bible, we learn that love is patient and kind. Patience is one of the pieces of evidence of love.
All through the Bible it talks about patience being a virtue. In the book of Galatians 5:22, it talks about when the Holy Spirit is controlling our lives, He will produce the fruits of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control within us. In the book of Ephesians 4:2 in the Bible it talks about being humble and gentle. Being patient with each other, making “allowances” for each other’s faults because of your love for others. Patience is a “characteristic of love.” The more loving we become the more we model the “nature” of God in our lives.
Because believers know He is “incredibly patient” with us. In the book of James 1:2-4 in the Bible, it talks about whenever troubles come our way; let it be an opportunity for “joy.” For when our faith is tested, our endurance has a chance to grow. For when your endurance is fully developed, you will be strong in character and ready for anything.
I have learned that much of my impatience was caused by me rushing ahead of God’s promises or trying to force His promises to happen ahead of schedule. Secondly, my impatience led to disobedience, causing me to miss out on God’s blessing in my life. Thirdly, my impatience led me to making poor life choices. Thank you for viewing my article.
