What does the Bible say about Greed? Greed, as defined in the Illumina Encyclopedia, is “grasping, craving, covetous, desirous, devouring, exploitative, extortionate, gluttonous, hoggish, indulgent, mercenary, miserly, piggish, and voracious,” accumulating far more than they ever will truly need. Greed is also “self-centered” and “selfish.” It is totally the opposite of generous and giving.
What is the outcome of greed in your life? In Isaiah 56:11-12 (NIV), we learn that “they are dogs with mighty appetites; they never have enough. They are shepherds who lack understanding; they all turn to their own way; each seeks his own gain.” One of the critical problems with greed is that it makes us “ignorant” of others’ needs and causes us to think only of ourselves.
In the book of 1 Corinthians 5:11 in the Bible, it says, “But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral and greedy, an idolater and a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.” In this passage, God ranks greed with some of the worst kinds of sin.
In the book 2 Chronicles 10:1-19 in the Bible, the king paid no attention to the people’s demands because he was motivated by greed, which caused his kingdom to be divided. Those who insist on having it all often wind up with little or nothing.
What Does the Bible say about Greed!!
Another outcome of greed is that it can make us “self-centered” and can lead us into thinking we deserve anything that we can “see,” “touch,” or “imagine.” It creates a greedy “appetite” for far more than we need. We can be released from this desire by humbling ourselves before God, realizing that all we need is his “approval.” When the Holy Spirit fills us, we see that this world’s “seductive” attractions are only “cheap” substitutes for what God really has to offer us.
